Flower-Maiden

Description

"She emerged from her hiding place; a thing in the shape of a woman, though not quite. Her green form was slender, while her flower-dotted hair – or perhaps a mass of vines in lieu of hair – was wide and trailed behind her like a luxuriant headdress or eminent tail. She was the Flower-Maiden, who Yelnak knew from the stories of his people. She is a giver of life and a guardian of all flora and fauna. Man is welcome in her domain, though she does not suffer him to kill an animal or pluck a flower without her permission. Otherwise, she is said to slay whole legions of offenders with her blade of petals. Yelnak couldn't believe such a dainty creature was capable of such destruction, but he, like his people, greatly feared these sort of things and did not wish to experience her ferocity firsthand.
The hunter's face was still to the ground as she approached. He did not glance upward until he saw the roots of her feet standing before him. When he did, he saw that her form wasn't nearly as human as he imagined. Her body was fibrous like a plant's, her arms were remarkably long and slim like grasping branches, and her legs were as those of a land-walking bird's, yet they moved with the grace of a heavenly dancer. Most eerie of all was her face, a feathery mask of flowers through which stared two penetrating eyes. She seemed more like a goblin than a maiden, albeit a goblin more majestic than any maiden he knew."

- Flower-Maiden, by JoeRB

I really enjoy the story bits written by JoeRB. They are fun, thrilling, display some good writing and neat ideas, good pacing and imagination. And so, I contacted the writer in question and offered to draw a picture for something! I was send the tidbit from above, a description of some guardian spirit slash goddess of nature. It was a fun challenge for a couple of reasons. First, it's a good flex of illustrator muscles, to draw for a solid brief and to a description. Second, it was quite a bit of time since I drew something more proper, illustration-wise, with a scene and background to the character. And third, I didn't use my markers for quite a bit of time, so it was nice to use them again.

Oh! And be sure to go here - The Flower-Maiden - to read the entire bit!
